Gifts The Soldier's Story
The Soldier's Story
Illustration of the finished hardback, with a sample nameA First World War ancestor's service, pieced together from the records that survive, with maps of where his unit served. A book to remember him by.
The pictures are illustrations of the finished book for Private Albert Edward Harris (a sample name). The map and timeline dates are real; your book follows your ancestor’s own records.
What's included
- His service, as far as the surviving records show: enlistment, unit, transfers, wounds, medals and discharge or death
- Where his battalion or unit was, from its war diary, written up as a dated narrative in our own words
- Maps we draw of the places his unit served, and a timeline
- His home town at the time, from open local sources
- Every fact cited to its record, and every uncertainty flagged (for example where two men share a name)
- A check before we write: if we cannot identify him with confidence, we tell you and you choose a full refund or a shorter book about his unit
- A proof before printing; UK delivery for the hardback
Formats and Christmas dates
- Digital edition (PDF, about 32 pages, emailed): £49, order by Friday 11 December for Christmas
- Hardback + PDF (A4, 48 pages): £99, order by Friday 20 November for Christmas
Christmas: This takes longer than our other books, because the records need careful reading. Hardbacks ordered by Friday 20 November and PDFs by Friday 11 December should arrive before Christmas. After that you get a printable gift certificate straight away and the book follows in January.
Real records, honestly used. We build each item from archives and published sources, and say so where the record is incomplete. We email a proof before printing. We never research living private individuals.
Facts are cited to records held by The National Archives (UK), the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and other public sources. We write our own narrative and draw our own maps; we do not reproduce National Archives document images. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
